Fotolitoplaate, often referred to as photo plates or lithographic plates, are a crucial component in the process of lithography, a printing technique. These plates are typically made of a metal, most commonly aluminum or zinc, that has been coated with a light-sensitive material. This coating allows for the selective transfer of an image or design onto the plate.

The process of creating an image on a fotolitoplaat involves exposing the coated surface to light through a mask or negative. Areas of the coating that are exposed to light undergo a chemical change, becoming either more or less receptive to ink, depending on the specific type of photosensitive material used (e.g., positive or negative working). After exposure, the unexposed or altered areas are removed through a developing process, revealing the image on the plate's surface.

Once prepared, the fotolitoplaat is used in a printing press. The plate is inked, and the ink adheres only to the image areas that were selectively preserved during the developing stage. These inked areas are then transferred to paper or another substrate, creating the printed image. Fotolitoplaate have been a cornerstone of commercial printing for decades, enabling high-volume production of books, magazines, and other printed materials. While digital printing methods have gained prominence, lithography and the use of fotolitoplaate remain important in many printing applications.
