Fortificações are defensive structures built to protect a settlement, territory, or strategic point from attack. Throughout history, the design and purpose of fortificações have evolved significantly, adapting to changes in warfare, technology, and political landscapes.

Early fortificações often consisted of simple earthworks, palisades, or stone walls, designed to impede the progress of infantry and cavalry. The Romans, renowned for their military engineering, constructed extensive networks of forts and walls, such as Hadrian's Wall, to defend their vast empire. Medieval Europe saw the rise of castles, complex fortificações featuring moats, drawbridges, towers, and battlements, serving as both defensive strongholds and residences for nobility.

The advent of gunpowder and artillery in the late medieval period rendered many traditional fortificações vulnerable.
