The word forståtte is a form of the Norwegian verb å forstå, which means “to understand.” It is used to express that someone had understood something in a past context. In contemporary Norwegian, forståtte is typically the past tense plural form of the verb, as in “De forståtte budskapet” (“They understood the message”). In many dialects and older texts it may also appear as the simple past indicative for a single subject, e.g. “Han forståtte spørsmålet” (“He understood the question”).

Etymologically, forstå comes from the pre‑prefix for- meaning “before, in front of” and the root stå “to stand”. The composition conveys the idea of standing before something figuratively in order to grasp it, a metaphor that dates back to Old Norse forstå, itself borrowed from Proto‑Germanic. The noun form forstått (singular) and forståtte (plural) derive from the past participle of the verb and refer to “understanding” or “comprehension”.

In contemporary spoken Norwegian, the simple past tense is most often expressed by forsto, with forståtte used mainly in written or more formal contexts. The present perfect construction, “har forstått,” is also common. The past participle forstått often appears in passive or nominal contexts: “Meldingen ble forstått av alle.”
