Formålsbegrænsede is a Danish term used to describe assets, funds, programs or organizations that are restricted to a defined purpose. The concept rests on the idea that resources are bound by governing documents, donor terms, or contractual clauses to be used only for the specific aims designated by the grant, foundation charter, agreement or similar instrument.

In practice, formålsbegrænsede arrangements are common in foundations (fonde), charitable associations, endowments and trust funds. The restrictions are typically set out in charters, statutes, donor agreements or grant conditions and may specify the field of activity, geographic area, time period, or particular projects to be supported. The purpose limitation is intended to safeguard the donor’s intent, ensure accountability to beneficiaries, and protect public trust in how resources are used.

Enforcement and governance play a central role. Management and governing bodies are responsible for ensuring that expenditures and activities stay within the designated purpose. If funds are used outside the restricted scope, remedies may include corrective actions, reallocation to a similar purpose, clawbacks, or liability for mismanagement, potentially leading to regulatory intervention or judicial processes.
