Formstudier, often translated as form studies, is a discipline in art and design education that focuses on the investigation and depiction of form, volume, and spatial relations. It emphasizes how mass, light, shadow, and perspective define three-dimensional objects on two-dimensional surfaces. The aim is to train perception and manual skills necessary for accurate and coherent representation of objects, figures, and environments.

Practices include contour drawing, gesture drawing, value studies, and geometric studies of basic solids (cube, sphere, cylinder, cone). Students work with still life, plaster casts, and figure references to analyze form from observation, using measurement techniques and rule-of-thumb scaffolds such as sight-sizing and perspective grids. Both traditional media (pencil, charcoal, clay) and digital tools may be employed. The focus is on form and structure rather than narrative content.

Historically, form studies have roots in classical art academies and were later central to modern and contemporary design education. Movements such as the Bauhaus emphasized understanding form as a basis for function in art and industry, influencing many curricula worldwide. The approach is often contrasted with studies of content or concept, highlighting transferable perceptual and technical skills.

In contemporary practice, formstudier remains a foundational component in art schools, design programs, and architecture curricula. It supports the development of spatial reasoning, draftsmanship, and the ability to translate three-dimensional ideas into communicative representations. Digital modeling and 3D visualization are increasingly integrated with traditional methods.
