Forforsterkerne, or preamplifiers, are electronic devices that raise very weak electrical signals to a level suitable for processing, recording, or further amplification. They are typically the first stage in a sound chain, taking input from microphones, instrument pickups, or line sources and providing gain, impedance matching, and signal conditioning before a power amplifier or recording interface.

There are several common types. Microphone preamps amplify the very small signals from microphones, while instrument or DI preamps are designed to accept high-impedance instrument signals. Preamps can be standalone units, rack-mounted, or integrated into mixers and audio interfaces. Some units include additional features such as equalization, compression, or routing options.

Key specifications include input impedance, gain range, noise performance, distortion, and headroom. Mic preamps typically offer high gain (often 40–60 dB) with low noise, and may provide phantom power (48 V) for condenser microphones. Preamps may also include pads to prevent overload, high-pass filters to remove rumble, and phase reversal. The impedance presented to the source and the linearity of gain affect perceived fidelity and tone.

Architectures vary: transformer-coupled, discrete transistor designs, op-amp based circuits, and vacuum-tube implementations each offer different balance between transparency and coloration. Tube and transformer designs are often described as “colored” or “warm,” while modern solid-state preamps tend toward low distortion and high headroom. In contemporary studios, preamps may be external units or built into audio interfaces, but they remain a crucial element of signal quality and sonic character.
