fontu

Fontu is a constructed language devised for a fictional world by the Fontu Institute. It was created to explore a consistent, aesthetically distinctive linguistic system within science fiction and fantasy narratives, and to provide a readable but unique medium for in-universe texts and dialogue.

Fontu originated in a 2010s worldbuilding project by linguists and writers and is presented as the language of a coastal civilization in the imaginary setting. The design emphasizes regular grammar, transparent phonology, and a distinctive script.

Phonology and grammar: Fontu has a concise phoneme inventory, with consonants p, b, t, d, k, g, s, m, n, l, r and vowels a, e, i, o, u. Syllables are typically CV or CVC, and stress falls on the penultimate syllable. The language is largely analytic, with limited inflection.

Grammar and word order: The basic sentence structure is subject–verb–object. Fontu relies on affixes to encode tense and aspect, while nouns show limited case marking. Adjectives normally follow the noun, and pronouns distinguish inclusive and exclusive plurality.

Writing system: Fontu uses a dedicated script, a featural alphabet of about 24 signs. It is written left to right and appears in styles ranging from simple educational texts to decorative calligraphy. The script is designed to be legible in print and on screen.
