Fontontwerpers are professionals who create typefaces, the design of letters and numerals used in printed and digital text. They blend art and engineering to produce consistent, legible, and expressive glyph sets that can be used across media and languages. Historically they worked in type foundries creating metal type; today their work is largely digital, though the same principles apply to vector outlines and bitmap hints.

The design process typically starts with research, mood sketches, and letterform exploration, followed by digitization in font-editing software. Designers construct glyphs as scalable outlines, establish consistent metrics, spacing (side bearings and kerning), and optical sizes. They also define multilingual support through Unicode encoding and scripts, sometimes delivering many styles within a single family (regular, bold, italic, condensed, etc.). Rendering quality requires hinting and tuning for various rendering engines and sizes.

Fontontwerpers work in a range of settings, from independent foundries and studios to in-house design teams within brands, publishing houses, and tech companies. Output formats include OpenType and TrueType fonts, often packaged as web fonts (WOFF/WOFF2) or variable fonts that adjust weight, width, and other axes.

Licensing and distribution are important considerations: fonts may be proprietary, open-source, or offered on a freemium basis. Notable historical and contemporary practitioners have shaped the field, and many major type families—Garamond, Bodoni, Univers, Helvetica, and others—reflect the collective work of fontontwerpers across generations.
