Fogágybetegség, also known as periodontal disease, is a common inflammatory condition affecting the tissues supporting the teeth. It begins with gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums, often characterized by redness, swelling, and bleeding. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe form of the disease. In periodontitis, the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that become infected. Bacteria in these pockets can break down bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place, leading to tooth loosening and eventual loss.

The primary cause of fogágybetegség is bacterial plaque, a sticky film that constantly forms on teeth. Poor oral hygiene, allowing plaque to accumulate, is a major risk factor. Diagnosis typically involves a dental examination, including probing the gum pockets to measure their depth. X-rays may be used to assess bone loss. Treatment for gingivitis often involves professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar, along with improved home care. Periodontitis may require more intensive treatments such as scaling and root planing to clean below the gum line, and in severe cases, surgical procedures to repair damaged tissues or bone. Prevention is key and involves regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups.
