A floorspacer is a generic term for a small tool or device used during flooring installation to maintain consistent gaps and alignment between components. It encompasses various designs, including wedge spacers, screw-adjustable spacers, and other fixtures that help hold a specified distance between floor elements and between the floor and surrounding features such as walls or profiles.

Most floorspacers are made from plastic, rubber, or light metal. They are inserted at critical points during installation to keep boards, panels, or planks in true alignment as the floor is secured or allowed to settle. In nail-down or glue-down hardwood and engineered wood installations, spacers help preserve straight edges and uniform joints, while in floating floor assemblies they assist in maintaining a uniform expansion gap along the perimeter.

Applications of floorspacers primarily occur in the setup phase of hardwood, engineered wood, and certain floating floor systems. They are typically used temporarily and are designed to be removed after the floor is fully installed, with expansion gaps subsequently hidden by baseboards, moldings, or trim. Some reusable spacers are designed to remain in place beneath trim, or to be repurposed for other projects, while disposable variants are discarded after installation.

In practice, floorspacers complement other installation practices such as acclimation of materials, precise measurement, and adherence to manufacturer guidelines for expansion gaps.
