floodtime

Floodtime is a term used in hydrology and related disciplines to describe the timing and duration of flood events. It is not a universally standardized term, and its precise meaning can vary by context, institution, or study. In general, floodtime can refer to when flood conditions begin, when they reach their peak, and how long they persist.

In forecasting and risk assessment, floodtime commonly denotes the travel or arrival time of a flood wave from upstream areas to a downstream location. It is related to, but distinct from, forecast lead time, and it may also refer to the time at which a location experiences peak discharge. Accurate estimation of floodtime supports timely warnings and resource deployment.

In flood duration analyses, floodtime may describe the length of inundation at a given site. This includes the onset time when water first rises above a threshold, the peak period, and the recession time when water falls back below the threshold. Duration is a key metric for evacuation planning, infrastructure resilience, and insurance assessments.

Methods used to estimate floodtime include hydrological and hydraulic models, hydrographs, stage-discharge relationships, and rainfall– runoff simulations. Observational data from stream gauges, radar rainfall data, and satellite remote sensing are used to calibrate and validate estimates.
