Flokkulation, also known as flocculation, is a process where fine particles dispersed in a liquid or gas aggregate to form larger clumps or flocs. This aggregation is typically driven by chemical or physical forces. In many industrial and environmental applications, flokkulation is an essential step for separating solid particles from a liquid or gas phase.

The process often involves the addition of a chemical agent called a flocculant. Flocculants are substances that neutralize the electrostatic charges on the surfaces of the dispersed particles, allowing them to come closer together. They can also bridge between particles, physically holding them in larger aggregates. Common flocculants include inorganic salts like aluminum sulfate (alum) and ferric chloride, as well as organic polymers.

The effectiveness of flokkulation depends on several factors, including the type and concentration of flocculant, the pH of the medium, temperature, and the degree of agitation.
