Floatandsettle is a term used in financial operations to describe a class of payment and settlement practices in which a transfer is initiated and the funds are slated for movement, but final settlement on the books occurs after a delay. The period between initiation and final settlement is referred to as the float. During this time, the payer’s account or the payer-bank’s ledger may be debited or reserved, while the recipient’s credit is recognized only when settlement completes through the applicable clearing system or central bank.
