flerfollikulær

flerfollikulær is a medical adjective derived from the Norwegian words fler (many) and follikkel (follicle). It describes a condition or lesion that involves multiple hair follicles simultaneously. The term is most frequently used in dermatology to characterize certain types of acne, cysts, or follicular disorders that affect several follicles within a single lesion or across a skin area. It may also appear in ophthalmology when describing diseases that affect the follicles of the conjunctiva or in gynecology when referring to ovarian cysts that arise from several follicles at once.

In dermatology, a flerfollikulær cystic lesion typically presents as a multilocular mass with a pearl‑like appearance, often seen in hidradenitis suppurativa or pilomatricoma. The clinical significance is that such lesions tend to be more extensive, potentially requiring surgical excision or more aggressive medical therapy compared to unifollikulær (single‑follicle) lesions. In acne, flerfollikulær comedones are dense clusters of comedones that are indicative of severe follicular hyperkeratosis.

The term is also used descriptively in pathology reports to denote a specimen containing tissue from numerous follicles, for instance in a biopsy of a follicular nevus. While the word is not part of the standard English medical vocabulary, it is commonly understood by clinicians working in Scandinavian countries and in international journals that cite Norwegian research.

Because flerfollikulær specifically refers to involvement of multiple follicles, it contrasts with terms such as unifollikulær or multifocalt, the latter of which refers to multiple distinct foci that may not be follicular.
