Flammesprøyting, also known as flame spraying or thermal spraying, is a coating process where molten or semi-molten materials are sprayed onto a surface. The material to be sprayed, often in powder or wire form, is heated to its melting point using a flame, electric arc, or plasma. This molten material is then propelled by a stream of gas or air onto the substrate. The impact causes the particles to flatten and interlock, forming a cohesive coating layer.

Various heat sources can be employed for flammesprøyting. Oxy-fuel flames, utilizing gases like acetylene or propane, are common for lower melting point materials. Electric arc spraying uses an electric arc between two consumable electrodes, which melts and atomizes the wire material. Plasma spraying, using a high-temperature ionized gas (plasma), can achieve extremely high temperatures, making it suitable for refractory materials like ceramics.

The primary purpose of flammesprøyting is to impart specific properties to the substrate surface. These properties can include wear resistance, corrosion resistance, thermal insulation, electrical insulation, or improved surface finish. The process is versatile and can be applied to a wide range of materials, including metals, ceramics, and composites. Applications are found in industries such as aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and energy.
