flachwickel

Flachwickel is a term used in first aid and nursing for a flat bandage technique in which a rectangular piece of fabric or gauze is wrapped around a limb or other body part to secure a wound dressing or to provide compression. The aim is to create a smooth, flat application without folds or bumps that could cause pressure points, while keeping the dressing in place and helping to reduce swelling.

Applications include securing dressings on arms or legs, providing light compression for minor sprains or edema, and offering a stable, immobilizing effect for a injured limb under supervision. Flachwickel is commonly taught in basic first aid and nursing training in German-speaking countries.

Materials typically used are sterile dressings, a rectangular piece of gauze or fabric, and a flat bandage or cloth. Fastening may be achieved with safety pins, tape, or other securement devices. Scissors may be needed to trim material to the appropriate size.

Technique (general): start with clean hands, place the dressing over the wound, then apply the flat bandage around the limb with turns that lie flat beside one another, overlapping each turn by roughly half the width. Secure the ends and check the circulation distal to the wrap. For wraps around the chest or abdomen, ensure that breathing is not restricted and the bandage is comfortable.

Care and safety: avoid wrinkles and excessive tightness, monitor distal color, temperature, and sensation, and remove or redo the bandage if there is numbness, increased pain, or signs of restricted circulation. Seek medical advice if bleeding continues or if infection is suspected.
