Fjallaklæði, meaning "mountain clothing" in Icelandic, refers to a range of garments designed for protection and comfort in cold, often harsh, mountain environments. The primary purpose of fjallaklæði is to insulate the wearer from low temperatures, shield them from wind and precipitation, and allow for freedom of movement during outdoor activities such as hiking, mountaineering, and skiing.

Key features of effective fjallaklæði often include multiple layers. A base layer, typically made of moisture-wicking materials like merino wool or synthetic fabrics, is worn next to the skin to draw sweat away and prevent chilling. An insulating mid-layer, such as a fleece jacket or down vest, provides warmth by trapping body heat. The outermost layer, or shell, is designed to be waterproof and windproof, protecting against the elements while ideally remaining breathable to allow moisture vapor to escape.

Materials commonly used in fjallaklæði are chosen for their performance characteristics. Natural fibers like wool offer excellent insulation even when damp, while synthetic materials are often lighter, faster-drying, and more durable. Waterproof and breathable membranes, such as Gore-Tex, are frequently incorporated into outer shells to provide a barrier against rain and snow without causing the wearer to overheat. Practical design elements, like adjustable hoods, reinforced seams, and secure pocket closures, are also essential for functionality in challenging conditions.
