Fiveelement, commonly referred to as the five-element theory, is a traditional framework in East Asian philosophy used to explain natural phenomena, health, and cosmology. It posits five fundamental elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. In Chinese contexts the system is often called wu xing and is described in terms of dynamic processes rather than fixed substances.

The elements interact through two primary patterns: the generation (sheng) cycle, where each element gives rise to the next (wood feeds fire, fire creates earth through ash, earth bears metal, metal collects water, water nourishes wood); and the control (ke) cycle, where elements regulate one another (wood parts earth, earth absorbs water, water quenches fire, fire melts metal, metal cuts wood). These cycles are used to interpret seasonal changes, physiological functions, emotions, and environmental balance.

Applications of the theory are broad. In traditional Chinese medicine, organs, symptoms, and therapeutic approaches are linked to specific elements. In feng shui, the arrangement of objects and spaces aims to harmonize qi according to elemental balances. Astrology, almanacs, and martial arts also draw on the five elements to explain cycles, compatibilities, and strategies. The concept has influenced various East Asian cultures and remains a common heuristic in wellness, design, and cultural studies.

Historically, the five-element idea developed from Daoist and Confucian thought and appears in classical Chinese literature dating to antiquity, with ongoing refinement in later periods. Similar five-part schemes exist in other cultures, such as the Indian Panchamahabhuta (earth, water, fire, air, ether), though they differ in terminology and emphasis. Modern usage often treats the five elements as a natural metaphor for balance and transformation.
