Fiskaalpoliitika, also known as fiscal policy, refers to the use of government spending and taxation to influence the economy. The primary actors in fiscal policy are the government's legislative and executive branches, which determine the budget and tax laws.

There are two main types of fiscal policy: expansionary and contractionary. Expansionary fiscal policy is implemented during economic downturns. It involves increasing government spending or cutting taxes to boost aggregate demand. Higher government spending can directly inject money into the economy through infrastructure projects or social programs. Tax cuts leave more disposable income for individuals and businesses, encouraging spending and investment.

Contractionary fiscal policy, on the other hand, is used to curb an overheating economy or reduce government debt. This involves decreasing government spending or raising taxes. Reduced government spending lowers aggregate demand, while tax increases take money out of circulation, thereby dampening inflationary pressures.

The effectiveness of fiscal policy can be influenced by various factors, including the state of the economy, the speed of implementation, and the multiplier effect, which describes how an initial change in spending can lead to a larger change in overall economic output. Debates exist regarding the optimal use and timing of fiscal policy, with economists often differing on whether fiscal measures are more or less effective than monetary policy in managing the economy.
