Filtripinna is a genus of filamentous green algae described from freshwater habitats in the Libera archipelago. It is a monotypic genus, containing the species Filtripinna marina. The name derives from filum (thread) and pinnis (wing), referencing its threadlike filaments and occasional branching pattern observed in specimens.

Morphology and anatomy

Filtripinna marina forms slender, uniseriate filaments that may reach up to several millimeters in loose mats on submerged substrates. Each filament consists of cylindrical cells measuring roughly 6–9 micrometers in width and 12–16 micrometers in length. Cells contain a single parietal chloroplast with one pyrenoid. Filaments can branch irregularly, yielding tufted appearances in favorable conditions.

Life cycle

Reproduction is primarily asexual, occurring through fragmentation of filaments. Under stress, resting cells may form, allowing survival in adverse conditions. Sexual reproduction has not been observed in standard laboratory cultures.

Ecology and habitat

Filtripinna marina tends to inhabit cool, nutrient-variable freshwater lakes and slow-moving streams with moderate light. It often forms slim biofilms on macrophytes and rocky substrates, contributing to local primary production and providing microhabitats for associated microorganisms. The species tolerates a range of pH and can persist with fluctuating nutrient levels, though it prefers clear to moderately turbid waters.

Distribution

The described range is limited to freshwater sites within the Libera archipelago, with sporadic reports from adjacent continental waters. Its distribution appears patchy, and its presence can be modality-dependent, influenced by light availability and substrate type.

Taxonomy and phylogeny

Filtripinna marina is placed within a provisional clade of filamentous Chlorophyta. Molecular data remain limited and sometimes inconclusive, but chloroplast morphology supports its placement near other filamentous green algae with similar growth forms.
