A filter plate is a component used in filtration equipment to support a filter medium and to form the filtration chambers between plates. It enables the separation of solids from liquids by forcing the liquid through the filter medium while solids are retained as a filter cake.

Typically, two plates are pressed together with a gasket to seal the filtration chambers between them; the filter medium (cloth, paper, or membrane) is placed on or between the plates. When pressure is applied, the liquid passes through the medium and the solids are retained as a cake.

The main design variants include recessed filter plates, where the filter medium is held in a recess to create a storage area for the filtrate, and membrane plates, which incorporate a flexible membrane to enable higher pressures or finer filtration. Materials commonly used for filter plates include steel, cast iron, aluminum, polypropylene, and other polymers; coatings may be applied to resist chemicals or corrosion.

Filter plates are used in filter presses for chemical processing, mining, food and beverage production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and wastewater treatment, as well as in laboratory filtration and industrial water treatment. They enable batch or continuous filtration and can be designed for a range of pressures and filtrate flows.

Maintenance and replacement involve regular inspection for cracks, gasket wear, or warping, as well as cleaning between cycles. Damaged plates or gaskets should be replaced to maintain proper sealing and filtration efficiency.
