Filrettigheter, also known as file permissions, are a fundamental aspect of operating system security. They control which users or groups can access and modify specific files and directories. These permissions are typically categorized into three main types: read, write, and execute.

Read permission allows a user to view the contents of a file or list the contents of a directory. Write permission enables a user to modify the contents of a file or add, delete, or rename files within a directory. Execute permission allows a user to run a file as a program or script, or to enter and traverse a directory.

In most Unix-like systems, permissions are assigned to three distinct entities: the owner of the file, the group associated with the file, and others (everyone else). This tripartite system allows for granular control over access. For example, the owner might have full read, write, and execute permissions, while a specific group might only have read access, and others might have no permissions at all.

These permissions are often represented by a string of characters, such as "rwxr-xr--". The first three characters represent the owner's permissions, the next three represent the group's permissions, and the final three represent the permissions for others. 'r' denotes read, 'w' denotes write, 'x' denotes execute, and '-' denotes the absence of a permission.

Understanding and managing filrettigheter is crucial for maintaining data integrity and system security. Improperly configured permissions can lead to unauthorized access, data loss, or system compromise. Operating systems provide commands and graphical interfaces to view and modify these permissions.
