feluccas

A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat used in the Nile Valley and along the eastern Mediterranean. Typically small to medium in size, it is powered mainly by a single lateen sail; oars may be used in calm or to maneuver. The term comes from Arabic falūka.

Design: Feluccas have long, slender hulls with shallow drafts built from timber such as cedar, elm, or teak. The rig consists of a triangular lateen sail mounted on a short mast; the sail is adjusted with a halyard and braces to catch the wind. Some larger or tourist fleets use two lateen sails or an auxiliary engine.

Operation and use: Historically they served for river transport, fishing, and cargo on the Nile and in coastal ports of Egypt and Sudan, and in parts of the eastern Mediterranean, including Alexandria. In modern times they are widely used for leisure cruises, sunset sails, and short trips for visitors.

Regions and history: The felucca tradition is ancient in the Mediterranean and has endured alongside steamers and motorized boats. On the Nile it remains an iconic symbol of river life and is closely associated with tourism and traditional craft.

Preservation and variations: While many feluccas are built of wood in traditional style, some newer vessels employ plywood or fiberglass hulls, and a few have diesel engines. Regulations and safety equipment vary by country, but life jackets and guided crews are common on tourist outings.
