felicific

Felicific is an adjective meaning producing or intended to produce happiness or felicity. The term derives from Latin felicitas, happiness, with the suffix -fic, indicating making or causing. In English, felicific is chiefly encountered in philosophical contexts.

In moral philosophy, felicific calculus refers to a proposed method for measuring the total amount of happiness generated by an action. It was articulated by Jeremy Bentham as part of classical utilitarianism. The calculus evaluates potential pleasures and pains by considering factors such as their intensity, duration, certainty or uncertainty, propinquity (nearness in time), fecundity (the likelihood that the action will be followed by further pleasures or pains), purity (freedom from subsequent pains or pleasures), and extent (how many people are affected). Actions that maximize expected felicity are deemed ethically preferable according to the principle of utility—the greatest happiness principle.

Outside this technical sense, felicific simply describes things that promote happiness. The more common philosophical language today uses terms like happiness, well-being, or utility, and the explicit felicific calculus is infrequently applied in contemporary normative ethics. The word also appears in historical discussions of utilitarianism and in general discourse to characterize happiness-producing policies or outcomes.
