Farbstabile is a term used to describe colors—dyes, pigments or colorants—that remain essentially unchanged under specified conditions, such as exposure to light, heat, chemical agents or washing. The concept is central to color fastness in textiles, plastics and coatings, where durable coloration is essential for both aesthetics and functionality. Color stability depends on the inherent chemical stability of the colorant, how it binds to the substrate, and any stabilizers or UV absorbers present in the formulation.

In textiles, colorfastness is evaluated for several factors, including washing, rubbing and light exposure. Standards and test methods such as ISO 105-C01 for washing fastness and ISO 105-B02 for lightfastness are used to quantify color change, typically expressed as Delta E on a grading scale. Pigments generally offer greater intrinsic light and chemical stability than many dyes, though modern dye chemistries and polymer matrices often incorporate stabilizers to enhance performance.

Factors that enhance farbstabile performance include robust chemical structures, strong binding to the substrate, and the use of UV stabilizers or hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) in polymers. The choice of colorant, substrate, and processing conditions are all critical to achieving lasting color.

Applications span textiles, plastics, paints and coatings, inks and automotive finishes. Limitations can arise from harsh chemical environments, high-intensity UV exposure, or incompatible processing conditions, which may necessitate specialized stabilizers or alternative colorants.
