Fajképzdés, a Hungarian term, translates to "species formation" or "speciation" in English. It refers to the evolutionary process by which new biological species arise. This process is fundamental to understanding the diversity of life on Earth.

Speciation typically occurs when populations of a species become reproductively isolated from each other. This isolation can happen through various mechanisms. Geographic barriers, such as mountains, rivers, or oceans, can physically separate populations, preventing gene flow between them. Over time, these isolated populations may accumulate different genetic mutations and adapt to their unique environments, leading to divergence.

Reproductive isolation can also arise without geographic separation, a process known as sympatric speciation.
