Fajelmélet, often translated as "race theory" or "species theory," refers to a collection of pseudoscientific and social theories that posit the existence of distinct biological races within the human species and assign hierarchical values to these races. These theories emerged primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries, often drawing upon flawed interpretations of early evolutionary thought and biological classifications.

Central to fajelmélet is the idea that human populations can be definitively divided into a small number of discrete, biologically determined races, each with inherent and immutable traits, abilities, and characteristics. These perceived differences were then used to justify social hierarchies, discrimination, and oppression. Proponents of fajelmélet often claimed that certain races were naturally superior to others, leading to ideologies such as scientific racism, eugenics, and colonialism.

Modern science, particularly genetics, has overwhelmingly refuted the biological basis of fajelmélet. Genetic studies demonstrate that human genetic variation is continuous and that the concept of distinct biological races is not supported by empirical evidence. The vast majority of genetic diversity exists within populations, not between them, and the observable traits used to define "races" are superficial and do not reflect deep biological divisions. Consequently, fajelmélet is now widely considered a discredited and harmful ideology.
