Fényinterferencia, or light interference in English, is a phenomenon that occurs when two or more waves, in this case light waves, overlap in space. When the crests of two light waves align, they reinforce each other, resulting in a brighter light. This is known as constructive interference. Conversely, when the crest of one wave aligns with the trough of another, they cancel each other out, leading to darkness or reduced brightness. This is destructive interference. The resulting pattern of alternating bright and dark bands is called an interference pattern. This effect is a fundamental demonstration of the wave nature of light.

The conditions for observing stable interference patterns are crucial. The light sources must be coherent, meaning they emit waves with a constant phase relationship and the same frequency. Lasers are excellent sources of coherent light, making them ideal for demonstrating interference. Natural light sources, like sunlight, are generally incoherent and produce random phase variations, making interference effects difficult to observe directly without specialized setups. Interference is a key principle behind many optical technologies, including holography, interferometry used for precise measurements, and the anti-reflective coatings found on lenses and screens. The colors seen in soap bubbles or oil slicks on water are also a result of light interference, where light waves reflecting off the front and back surfaces of the thin film interfere.
