Färgningsbadet, or dye bath, refers to the liquid solution used in textile dyeing processes. This solution contains the dye, water, and often other chemicals such as salts, acids, or alkalis, which help to fix the dye to the fabric. The composition of the dye bath is crucial for achieving the desired color and ensuring its permanence. Different types of dyes require specific conditions and auxiliary chemicals. For instance, direct dyes are often applied in a neutral or slightly alkaline bath with added salt to promote exhaustion, meaning the dye is transferred effectively from the bath to the fiber. Reactive dyes, on the other hand, require an alkaline pH to form a chemical bond with the fiber, and their dye bath may also include electrolytes.

The temperature of the dye bath is another critical factor. Higher temperatures generally increase the solubility of the dye and can speed up the dyeing process, but excessive heat can damage certain fibers or lead to uneven dyeing. The pH of the dye bath controls the solubility and reactivity of the dye molecules. The concentration of dye and auxiliaries in the bath determines the depth of shade and the levelness of the dyeing. After the dyeing process, the fabric is typically rinsed to remove any unfixed dye, and the spent dye bath is then treated or disposed of according to environmental regulations.
