A fájdalomérzékelés, or nociception, is the sensory nervous system's process of encoding noxious stimuli. It is a vital protective mechanism that alerts us to potential or actual tissue damage. This process involves specialized sensory neurons called nociceptors, which are located throughout the body. These nociceptors are activated by various stimuli, including mechanical (e.g., cuts, pressure), thermal (e.g., extreme heat or cold), and chemical (e.g., inflammatory substances) triggers.

When nociceptors are activated, they generate electrical signals that travel along nerve fibers to the spinal cord. In the spinal cord, these signals are processed and then relayed to the brain, specifically to areas such as the thalamus, somatosensory cortex, and limbic system. The brain interprets these signals as pain, allowing us to perceive its location, intensity, and emotional quality. This perception can then lead to a behavioral response, such as withdrawing from the painful stimulus or seeking relief.

The experience of pain is subjective and can be influenced by various factors, including psychological state, past experiences, and cultural background. While pain serves an important protective function, chronic pain, which persists beyond the normal healing period, can significantly impair quality of life.
