Nociception is the neural process of encoding and processing noxious stimuli that have the potential to cause tissue damage. It represents the physiological mechanism through which the body detects potentially harmful stimuli such as extreme temperatures, mechanical pressure, or chemical irritants. Specialized sensory receptors called nociceptors are responsible for detecting these stimuli and initiating the nociceptive response. These receptors are distributed throughout the body, particularly in the skin, muscles, and internal organs.

When activated, nociceptors generate electrical signals that travel along nerve fibers to the spinal cord and then to the brain. The nociceptive pathway involves several steps, including transduction, transmission, modulation, and perception. This complex process allows the central nervous system to interpret the intensity, location, and quality of potentially harmful stimuli.

Nociception serves as an important protective mechanism, alerting the body to danger and enabling appropriate avoidance behaviors. It differs from pain in that nociception refers strictly to the neural encoding process, while pain is the subjective experience that may result from this process. Conditions involving impaired or exaggerated nociception can lead to either insufficient awareness of harm or chronic pain states, both of which can significantly affect quality of life.
