extralacustrine
Extralacustrine refers to environments or geological formations that are located outside of, or in contrast to, a lake. This term is commonly used in paleolimnology, the study of past lakes, to distinguish between sediments and fossils deposited within a lake basin and those found in areas that were never submerged by the lake. For example, an extralacustrine deposit might be found on the slopes surrounding a former lake basin, or in a river channel that flowed into or out of the lake.
The distinction between lacustrine (lake-related) and extralacustrine environments is crucial for reconstructing past landscapes and understanding
Paleoenvironmental interpretations rely heavily on identifying the origin of sedimentary materials and fossil assemblages. Discovering extralacustrine
