Externalborder is the outer boundary of a political entity that separates its sovereign territory from foreign territory and is managed through a system of controls and regulations. The term is commonly used in international relations, border security, and customs to denote the outermost limits of jurisdiction beyond which entry and exit are regulated.

External borders take many forms: land borders, maritime boundaries, and airspace boundaries. They may be defined by treaties such as bilateral border agreements, by natural features, or by straight-line coordinates. Their status can be de jure (legally recognized) and de facto (enforced on the ground).

Governance and operation: national authorities such as border police, customs, immigration agencies, coast guards, and military resources manage border control, including entry and exit checks, document verification, visa policies, and cargo inspection. Border management often involves infrastructure like border crossing points, checkpoints, and fences or sensors, and may use technology such as surveillance, biometrics, and data sharing with neighboring states.

Legal framework: external borders operate under international law, recognizing state sovereignty to regulate entry and exit, and obligations under international treaties on non-refoulement, asylum procedures, and the treatment of migrants. Regional arrangements coordinate border control across member states.

Challenges and issues: irregular migration, illegal cross-border movement, smuggling, human trafficking, and security threats. Human rights considerations require proportionate and non-discriminatory practices, access to asylum, and humanitarian protections.
