Common forms include export processing zones and free trade zones, industrial parks with export-oriented firms, and port or logistics hubs. Policy instruments frequently used to support exportområden include tariff exemptions or reduced duties, tax incentives, streamlined customs procedures, subsidies for export promotion, and investments in transport, logistics, and digital infrastructure. Regional and national authorities may provide export promotion services, market information, and training to firms seeking to enter international markets.

Economically, exportområden can drive regional growth, job creation, and productive specialization, but they can also create exposure to global demand swings, exchange-rate risk, and competition from lower-cost regions.
