Expeditionary is an adjective describing something related to or suited for an expedition. It is commonly used to refer to military forces or operations conducted abroad, as well as to scientific or exploratory missions that depart from home bases. The term derives from the Latin expeditio “a setting out, dispatch,” through Old French expédition, and entered English in the sense of deployment to distant theaters.

In a military context, expeditionary denotes the capacity to project power over long distances and to operate with limited pre-positioned infrastructure. An expeditionary force is organized for rapid deployment, sustainment in hostile or austere environments, and interoperability with allied forces. This approach emphasizes mobility, logistics, and command and control that can be established quickly in theaters far from home. Historically, nations have formed expeditionary forces for major overseas campaigns, including the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I and various postwar expeditionary contingents in later conflicts. In contemporary usage, expeditionary warfare and force design focus on airlift, sealift, pre-positioned stocks, and modular units that can be scaled for different missions.

Outside military usage, expeditionary can describe teams and operations such as expeditionary research, medical or humanitarian missions, or exploration parties that travel to remote locations to collect data, provide assistance, or conduct investigations.
