Excitatorie is a term that has appeared in occasional scholarly writing to denote factors, signals, or processes that increase neuronal excitation. It is not a standard term in established neuroscience glossaries, and its exact meaning can vary by author. Broadly, excitatorie can be used as an adjective describing something that raises a neuron’s likelihood of firing, or as a noun referring to a class of excitatory influences.

In neuroscience usage, excitatorie may refer to inputs or substances that raise membrane depolarization or decrease the threshold for action potential initiation. This includes excitatory neurotransmission mediated by glutamate at AMPA and NMDA receptors, as well as other mechanisms that increase intrinsic excitability, such as modulation of ion channels or signaling pathways that enhance neuronal responsiveness.

Mechanisms underlying excitatorie effects range from rapid synaptic transmission to slower, cell-intrinsic changes.
