EthylenCopolymere are polymers obtained by copolymerizing ethylene with one or more comonomers. They form a broad family that includes materials with a wide range of properties, from flexible films to rigid plastics and elastomeric blends. They are distinct from polyethylene, which is formed from ethylene alone.

In structure, copolymerization inserts comonomer units into the polyethylene chain, reducing crystallinity and density. The arrangement can be random, alternating, or more block-like, depending on the catalyst system and reaction conditions. Commonly used catalysts include Ziegler-Natta and metallocene systems, which enable control over comonomer distribution and molecular architecture.

Production methods vary with the desired material. Random and block ethylene copolymers are typically produced by coordination polymerization using controlled catalysts, enabling precise control of comonomer content. Ethylene copolymers such as ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) or ethylene-ethyl acrylate (EEA) are frequently made with high-pressure radical polymerization or solution processes in the presence of the comonomer. Specialty EVA grades, as well as other copolymers, can be formulated to balance toughness, clarity, processability, and heat resistance.

Properties depend strongly on comonomer type and amount. Increasing comonomer content generally lowers density and crystallinity, increases flexibility and impact resistance, and can improve clarity and sealability. Lowering comonomer content tends to increase stiffness and chemical resistance.

Examples and applications include EVA for packaging films, laminates, and adhesives; ethylene-propylene copolymers for seals, electrical insulation, and automotive parts; and elastomeric copolymers used in blends and coatings. EPDM is a related ethylene-containing terpolymer used for weather seals and gaskets.
