Etching gel is a viscous chemical solution primarily used in dentistry for dental etching. It is typically a mild acid, most commonly phosphoric acid, suspended in a gel or paste form. This formulation allows for precise application to the tooth surface, preventing the acid from spreading to unintended areas.

The purpose of dental etching gel is to create a microscopic porous surface on the enamel or dentin of a tooth. This roughened surface, often referred to as micro-retention, is crucial for the effective bonding of dental adhesives and restorative materials. When the etchant is applied, it selectively dissolves the mineral content of the tooth structure, leaving behind a network of tiny pits and channels.

After a specific period, usually around 15 to 60 seconds depending on the product and tooth structure, the etching gel is thoroughly rinsed away with water and the tooth surface is dried. This process prepares the tooth for the subsequent application of a bonding agent and then the final restoration, such as a composite filling or a veneer. The microscopic irregularities created by the etching gel allow the bonding agent to penetrate and create a strong, durable mechanical lock between the tooth and the restorative material.
