Estovaikutusten is a Finnish term used in technical and academic contexts to denote the preventive or inhibitory effects produced by an intervention, program, or policy. The word estovaikutus combines esti- (to prevent, to deter) with vaikutus (effect), with estovaikutusten as the genitive plural. In practice, estovaikutusten refer to the extent to which a measure reduces a target outcome, such as disease incidence, injury rate, pollution, or other adverse events.

Used across fields such as public health, pharmacology, and environmental policy, estovaikutusten focus on how interventions change risk or exposure rather than on direct benefits or harms to individuals. They can be direct (a vaccine preventing illness) or indirect (traffic-calming measures reducing accident risk by changing behavior). The concept also encompasses unintended preventive effects, for example when a policy improves general health behaviors and thereby lowers multiple risks.

Assessment of estovaikutusten relies on study designs that compare outcomes with and without the intervention, or before and after implementation. Methods include randomized trials, observational studies with control groups, time-series analyses, and modeling. Results are typically reported as risk reductions, relative risks, incidence rate differences, or population-attributable improvements.

Estovaikutusten should be distinguished from adverse or side effects (haittavaikutukset, sivuvaikutukset) and from qualitative assessments of public acceptance or feasibility. In Finnish discourse, the term is most common in technical reports, policy briefs, and scholarly articles dealing with the impact of preventive measures.
