Espressokoneen, commonly known as an espresso machine, is a coffee brewing device that produces espresso by forcing pressurized hot water through finely ground coffee beans. This process results in a concentrated coffee beverage with a rich flavor and a characteristic crema on top. Espresso machines vary widely in design and complexity, from simple manual lever machines to sophisticated automatic and semi-automatic models.

The fundamental principle behind an espressokoneen is the application of pressure. Typically, this pressure is generated by a pump, which pushes water heated to a specific temperature (around 90-96 degrees Celsius) through the coffee grounds packed into a portafilter. The high pressure, usually around 9 bars, extracts the soluble compounds from the coffee quickly, creating the intense flavor and aroma of espresso.

There are several main types of espresso machines. Manual machines require the user to control the entire brewing process, including water temperature and pressure. Semi-automatic machines allow some control over water flow but typically have a pump that generates the necessary pressure. Automatic machines automatically control the water volume, while super-automatic machines grind the beans, tamp them, brew the espresso, and often froth milk, all at the touch of a button. The choice of machine often depends on the user's desired level of control, convenience, and budget.
