Esoterica refers to knowledge, practices, and texts that are intended to be accessible only to a specific group of initiates or to those who have been taught to interpret them. The term derives from the Greek esoterikos, meaning "inner" or "secret," contrasted with exoteric, which is meant for the general public. In contemporary usage, esoterica often denotes beliefs and traditions that claim access to hidden or transcendent truths through symbol, ritual, or inner experiences. In scholarly contexts, the field is described as Western esotericism or the study of esotericism, which analyzes historical currents that profess hidden knowledge across multiple cultures.

Esoteric traditions encompass a wide range of currents, including mysticism, alchemy, astrology, magic, and theurgical practices. Foundational strands appear in Hellenistic philosophical schools, Jewish Kabbalah, Christian Gnosticism, Islamic Sufism and philosophical sciences, as well as Hindu and Buddhist tantric and tantric-inspired movements. Hermeticism, Rosicrucianism, the Renaissance occult revival, and modern esoteric currents such as Theosophy and some strands of the New Age movement are commonly cited within the broader category. Practices often rely on symbolic language, initiated transmission, and the belief in correspondences between the macrocosm and microcosm.

In modern scholarship, esotericism is studied as a historical and cultural phenomenon—how ideas travel, transform, and influence religion, philosophy, and art. Researchers such as Antoine Faivre and Wouter Hanegraaf have outlined approaches to classifying and analyzing esoteric currents, while debates continue about boundaries, terminology, and the relationship between esotericism and mainstream religion.
