Their primary function is to remove larger particles from a fluid or gas before it passes through the main, finer filtration stage. By capturing accumulated debris early, esikuidut help reduce fouling, extend the life of downstream filters or membranes, and lower operating costs.

Construction and materials commonly used for esikuidut include polypropylene, polyester, and cellulose. They are available in several forms, such as pleated cartridge filters, depth-type media, or bag filters. The choice of material and form depends on the application, the fluid or gas being filtered, and the required holding capacity.

Typical micron ratings for esikuidut range from a few microns to several tens of microns, balancing filtration efficiency with flow requirements. They are often designed for relatively high flow and easier maintenance, with many being disposable after a set service interval. Some washable or reusable options exist, particularly in special industrial settings.

Applications for esikuidut include water treatment, beverage and food processing, pharmaceutical production, HVAC and compressed air systems, and other industrial processes where protecting sensitive downstream equipment is important. They are commonly used ahead of final-stage filters such as membrane systems (RO, UF) or fine cartridge and bag filters.
