Errorchecking refers to techniques and processes used to identify and, where possible, correct errors in data, computations, or control flow to maintain integrity and reliability. It encompasses detection, correction, and fault-tolerance strategies, with detection focusing on identifying anomalies and correction aiming to recover or repair them without excessive intervention.

Common mechanisms include parity bits, checksums, cyclic redundancy checks (CRC), and hash digests. Parity offers simple detection for single-bit flips; checksums and CRCs provide stronger detection for larger data blocks. In memory and storage, error-correcting codes (ECC) and RAID configurations use redundancy to detect and correct errors. Digital signatures and message authentication codes (MACs) help detect tampering and data corruption.

In software and systems design, error checking is implemented through input validation, type and range checks, invariants, assertions, and structured exception handling. Defensive programming aims to validate assumptions at data boundaries and during processing. Testing practices such as unit testing, fuzz testing, and property-based testing help uncover unhandled error paths. Runtime monitoring and error reporting enable the detection and diagnosis of anomalies in production environments.

Trade-offs involve overhead, latency, and potential false positives or negatives. Effective error checking balances reliability with performance and complexity. Examples include CRC checks for network packets, file integrity verification via checksums or cryptographic hashes, ECC memory for single-bit correction, and validation logic that prevents invalid inputs from propagating through a system.
