Epiteliuuri is a term that refers to the presence of epithelial cells in the urine. Epithelial cells are the cells that form the lining of various organs and cavities in the body, including the urinary tract. A small number of epithelial cells in the urine is normal, as these cells are constantly shed from the lining of the urinary system. However, an increased number of epithelial cells, or the presence of specific types of epithelial cells, can sometimes indicate an underlying medical condition.

There are three main types of epithelial cells found in urine: squamous epithelial cells, transitional epithelial cells, and renal tubular epithelial cells. Squamous epithelial cells are the most common type and originate from the outer lining of the urethra and vagina. Their presence in urine, especially in large numbers, usually has no clinical significance and can be due to contamination during sample collection. Transitional epithelial cells are found in the lining of the renal pelvis, ureters, bladder, and the upper part of the urethra. An increase in these cells might suggest inflammation or other issues within the bladder or ureters. Renal tubular epithelial cells are shed from the lining of the kidney tubules. A significant number of these cells in urine is often a sign of kidney damage or disease.

The interpretation of epithelial cells in a urinalysis depends on the quantity and type of cells observed, along with other findings in the urine sample and the patient's clinical presentation. Routine urinalysis often involves microscopic examination to identify and count these cells.
