The epiglottis is a small, leaf-shaped flap of cartilage located in the throat, just above the larynx (voice box) and behind the tongue. It plays a crucial role in the human respiratory and digestive systems by preventing food and liquid from entering the windpipe (trachea) during swallowing. When a person swallows, the epiglottis folds downward to cover the opening of the larynx, directing food and drink into the esophagus instead. After the swallow, it returns to its upright position, allowing air to pass into the trachea.

The epiglottis is composed of elastic cartilage, which provides flexibility and strength. It is lined with a mucous membrane that helps protect it from irritation. This structure is particularly important for preventing aspiration, a condition where foreign material enters the lungs, which can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia.

Epiglottitis is a severe infection of the epiglottis, often caused by bacterial infections like *Haemophilus influenzae* type b. Symptoms include difficulty swallowing, a sore throat, fever, and a muffled voice. Epiglottitis is considered a medical emergency because it can rapidly obstruct the airway, requiring immediate intervention such as intubation or a tracheostomy. Vaccination against *H. influenzae* type b has significantly reduced the incidence of this condition in vaccinated populations.

Other conditions affecting the epiglottis include trauma, tumors, or congenital abnormalities. Symptoms may vary depending on the underlying cause but often include swallowing difficulties, pain, or respiratory distress. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, imaging studies, and sometimes a laryngoscopy to visualize the epiglottis directly. Treatment depends on the cause but may include antibiotics, surgical removal, or supportive care for airway management.
