Environmental hardening is the systematic process of strengthening an environment to reduce vulnerability to threats and to improve resilience. The term encompasses physical, digital, and organizational aspects, and aims to minimize the impact of natural hazards, climate-related events, and other disruptions on essential functions.

In physical terms, hardening focuses on infrastructure resilience—reinforced buildings, flood barriers, wind-resistance, seismic upgrades, and safe storage for hazardous materials. In digital and operational terms, hardening involves reducing attack surfaces through secure configurations, patch management, access controls, network segmentation, resilient backups, and robust incident response planning. In organizational terms, it includes governance, training, supplier risk management, and continuity planning.

Common approaches include conducting risk assessments to identify critical assets and threats; applying defense-in-depth and the principle of least privilege; following recognized baselines and benchmarks for system hardening; implementing redundancy for power, cooling, and network connectivity; and ensuring rapid detection, containment, and recovery through testing and drills.

Benefits include reduced likelihood and impact of incidents, faster recovery, and potential long-term cost savings. Challenges include up-front costs, keeping controls up to date, balancing security with usability, and managing complex supply chains across changing environmental conditions.
