Modern envelopes typically have a pre-glued or self-sealing flap and may include a transparent window to reveal the printed address on the letter inside. Materials vary from white papers to recycled fibers.

Materials and closures: Common envelope materials include white writing paper, kraft, and manila. Some envelopes incorporate a transparent window made of film, while others are windowless. Closures range from moisture-activated gummed flaps to peel-and-seal self-adhesive types. Padded envelopes, with bubble lining, provide extra protection for fragile contents.

Sizes and types: European practice includes C4, C5, C6, and DL formats, while North American use includes formats such as #10. Size selection is typically linked to the size of the documents to be mailed. There are also invitation envelopes, security envelopes with patterned interiors, and specialty envelopes for watermarking or branding.
