Estimation methods and limitations: EV can be estimated from public market data, or derived from discounted cash flow analyses. It is sensitive to debt levels and cash balances, and may understate or overstate value for highly leveraged or cash-rich firms. Intangible assets, off-balance-sheet items, and non-operational assets may not be fully captured, limiting EV as a sole gauge of intrinsic value. Variants involve adjusting for non-operating assets, minority interests, or using different multiples.
