Engobing is a ceramic decorating technique that involves applying a slip, which is a liquid suspension of clay, to greenware or bisque pottery. This slip is often colored with metallic oxides or stains to create decorative effects. The term "engobe" itself is derived from the French word for "coat."

Engobes can be applied in various ways, including brushing, dipping, pouring, or spraying. The viscosity of the slip is crucial, as it needs to be thin enough to flow smoothly but thick enough to adhere to the surface. Engobes can be applied in thin, translucent layers, allowing the color of the clay body to show through, or in thicker, opaque layers that completely cover the underlying surface.

The composition of an engobe typically includes clay, water, and coloring agents. Fluxes may also be added to help the engobe fuse to the clay body during firing. The firing temperature of the engobe often matches that of the clay body it is applied to, though sometimes a slightly lower firing temperature is used.

Engobing is a versatile technique used to achieve a wide range of aesthetic outcomes. It can be used to create solid colored surfaces, intricate patterns through techniques like sgraffito (where the engobe is scratched through to reveal the clay beneath), or to add texture. It is a common practice in both functional and decorative ceramics.
