Enflure is a French medical term describing swelling or tumefaction of tissue. In English, it is commonly translated as swelling or edema. Enflure is not a diagnosis by itself; it is a sign indicating fluid accumulation or tissue enlargement, which can be local or diffuse, acute or chronic.

Causes of enflure vary by whether the swelling is local or generalized. Local enflure arises from injury, surgery, infection, or inflammatory processes. Generalized enflure, or edema, results from systemic conditions such as heart failure, kidney or liver disease, venous insufficiency, or lymphatic obstruction. Allergic reactions, medication effects, pregnancy, and prolonged immobility can also contribute.

Assessment typically involves history and physical examination, including evaluation for pitting versus non-pitting swelling, skin temperature and color, and tenderness. Clinicians may measure limb circumferences and assess accompanying symptoms. Diagnostic tools can include ultrasound to evaluate vascular or lymphatic drainage, blood tests to detect infection or organ dysfunction, and imaging to identify underlying causes or complications such as deep vein thrombosis or cellulitis.

Management and prognosis depend on the underlying cause. Local enflure may respond to rest, elevation, compression, and anti-inflammatory medications. Systemic edema often requires treatment of the root condition, and diuretics may be used in select cases. Lifestyle measures such as reducing salt intake and increasing physical activity can help in some chronic conditions. Red flags—sudden unilateral swelling with warmth, chest pain, fever, or shortness of breath—require urgent medical evaluation.
